Washer Won’t Spin Safe Things to Check First

A Kenmore washer that will not spin leaves evidence in the load: unbalance, a lid that never reported closed, water that never left, or a drive that never tried.

Article details

A Kenmore washer that will not spin is usually blocked by something the load or the cabinet is reporting: an unbalanced load, a lid or door that has not registered as closed, or water that has not drained. Redistribute the load, close the lid or door firmly, and check for standing water before anything else. If the drum is empty, closed, and still never turns, book a visit.

The laundry itself is the first instrument. A sopping comforter plastered to one side is a different story than a dry, empty tub that never tried to turn, and both are different from a door that never reported closed.

Spin is the last act of a wash. Water still in the tub means the machine may refuse to spin on purpose. That is drain evidence wearing a spin costume.

What does a washer check before it spins?

Spin is the fastest part of the cycle, so the washer wants three things first: the lid or door closed, water drained to the right level, and a load that is distributed well enough not to shake the cabinet. If any of those is not met, the washer can pause, slow, or skip the spin rather than run through it.

The use-and-care manual for one Kenmore Elite top-loader says a washer must have its lid closed to run and may pause during certain phases. It may also stop to reduce suds. A pause is not always a failure, so give it a moment before you decide it has stopped.

Read the load before you blame the motor

Kenmore laundry includes top-load and front-load cabinets. Only some have a user pump filter. Name the platform when you book.

What you notice What it can point to What you can safely check
Wet clothes bunched on one side Unbalanced load Redistribute the load and avoid washing a single heavy item
Cabinet shakes or walks Load or leveling Check that the feet are in firm contact with the floor
Water still in the tub Drain problem or suds Look at the drain hose position and the pump filter if your booklet shows one
Door will not unlock or lid will not stay closed Lock or switch not satisfied Close it firmly; do not force the door
Suds visible near the end of the cycle Too much or the wrong detergent Use only HE detergent and run a rinse and spin
Tub empty, door closed, load sane, nothing turns Motor or drive Stop and book washer repair

Four evidence piles

The first three piles are owner-visible. The fourth is washer repair. Hands under a basket that might still be energized are not a fifth test.

How does an unbalanced load stop a spin?

The manual for one top-load model describes a tightly packed or unbalanced load as a spin stopper. It says to remove several items, rearrange the load evenly, close the lid, and touch and hold the START/PAUSE/Unlock Lid control. It advises against washing single items and says the washer must be level with its feet in firm contact with the floor.

On a flexing floor, the same manual says three-quarter-inch plywood under the washer reduces vibration. If the cabinet moves a lot during every spin, the floor may matter as much as the load.

Can suds stop a washer from spinning?

Regular detergent, or too much high-efficiency detergent, creates suds that can slow or stop draining and spinning. To clear suds, the manual says to cancel the cycle and select RINSE & SPIN. A load that is wet at the end often has a drain cause, such as small items caught in the pump or between the basket and tub, a low-spin-speed cycle, or a kinked drain hose.

The top-loader manual puts the drain hose limits at no more than 4.5 inches into the standpipe, and not above 96 inches from the floor. A hose that sits outside those numbers can turn a drain problem into a no-spin complaint.

  • Unbalance: one heavy wet item, cabinet walking, or a load that never distributed — split it and level the feet
  • Lid or door: the latch never clicked, or the lid switch never agreed the cabinet was shut
  • Drain: standing water, so spin never had permission to start
  • Motor or drive: tub empty, door closed, load sane, and the basket never attempted to turn

What the panel digits are not

Why will the front-load door not unlock?

On a front-loader, the door stays locked during operation. The manual for one Kenmore Elite front-load model says to press START/PAUSE to unlock it, and that the door will not unlock if the interior temperature is too high or the water level is too high. In that case the manual describes draining with POWER, then SPIN SPEED, then START/PAUSE, and says not to force the door.

Items caught between the door and seal can damage the gasket and cause leaking, so check that nothing is trapped before you restart.

If the washer stored a code, copy it and use that washer’s booklet. Digits are not a universal Kenmore spin dictionary, and they are not a reason to reach under the basket.

Why does my washer stop mid-cycle without spinning?

It may be pausing for a lid or door check, an unbalanced load, or excess suds. Close the lid or door, redistribute the load, and cancel and run RINSE & SPIN if suds are visible.

Can too much detergent keep a washer from spinning?

Yes. The manuals say suds can slow or stop draining and spinning, and they call for high-efficiency detergent in the recommended amount.

Is it safe to reach under a washer that will not spin?

No. Do not reach under the basket or open the cabinet. Stop at the checks the booklet shows and book washer repair when the drum never starts to turn.

If the door is closed, the tub is empty, the load is split, and spin still never starts, book washer repair and say whether the machine is stacked. Access changes labor. It does not merge a washer and a dryer into one part.
