Why Your Kenmore Dishwasher Leaves Dishes Wet

Wet Kenmore loads are three different problems: rinse chemistry, water that never left, and heat that never arrived. Do not treat them as one heater.

Dishes come out wet from a Kenmore dishwasher most often because of how the load is stacked or because the rinse aid dispenser is empty. Check the dispenser, angle cups so they drain, and let the cycle finish before opening the door. If every program leaves a soaked load with a dry tub floor, book a visit.

A wet load is not one complaint. Rinse film on plastic, a tub that never emptied, and a cycle that never added heat look the same in the rack and are three different paths.

If the sump is a lake, stop here and use the not-draining checklist. This page is for dishes that come out wet while the tub floor looks more or less empty. Check your booklet to see whether your model uses rinse aid and where the dispenser sits.

How does rinse aid help dishes dry?

The use-and-care manual for one Kenmore dishwasher model says the dishwasher is designed to use rinse aid, which improves drying by letting water drain off the dishes after the final rinse. It specifies liquid rinse aid only, and lists an empty dispenser among the causes of dishes that do not dry.

Rinse aid also helps with spots and film. Check that the dispenser has some in it before you worry about anything on the heating side.

Chemistry and geometry that impersonate a dead heater

Upright mugs pond rinse water. Nested bowls hide spray. An empty rinse-aid dispenser leaves droplets that get blamed on hardware. None of that proves a heater failed. It does prove the load was stacked for puddles. Rinse aid, load layout, and a clean tub together do more for drying than any single setting.

Does water temperature affect wet dishes?

The same manual lists causes of spots and film that also show up as wet dishes: water below 120 degrees Fahrenheit, too little or too much detergent, overloading, improper loading, and water pressure outside the range of 20 to 80 psi. It adds that cycles take longer when the dishwasher is connected to cold water, since the dishwasher has to heat that water itself.

None of those proves a faulty part, and each one can be checked from the sink or the water heater without opening the machine. They are conditions at the sink and the supply that your booklet describes for your own model.

Heat is a later question

This page will not invent whether your Kenmore dishwasher has a heated-dry step. The booklet and the door sticker will. Plastics still lag even when heat exists. Opening the door at the first beep dumps remaining vapor as droplets.

What helps and what does not

Plastic items hold water longer than glass or ceramic. The manual says plastic should go in the top rack only and only if it is marked dishwasher safe. Overloading and nested items block spray and leave pockets of water, so load for drainage rather than for count.

Opening the door early can dump hot vapor as droplets. The manual also notes that if the door is opened during a cycle, you must press Start within four minutes or the dishwasher turns off and the settings are lost.

How do you sort a wet load by what you see?

Wet plastic with dry glass is ordinary, so use the top rack and rinse aid. Pooled droplets in mugs and bowls point to loading angle, so tilt cups down and avoid nesting.

  • Wet plastic with dry glass: ordinary behavior for plastic, so use the top rack and rinse aid.
  • Droplets pooled in mugs and bowls: loading angle, so tilt cups down and avoid nesting.
  • White film plus wet dishes: hard water or detergent amount.
  • Water still in the tub: leave this article and use the not-draining checklist.
  • Every program soaked, dry tub, rinse aid present: book dishwasher repair.

When every program is soaked

Rinse aid present, cups angled down, longest program finished, sump dry, and the load is still dripping is a heat, fan, or control question for a visit — not a third bottle of rinse aid. A tub that is dry but a load that is soaked after the longest program is the pattern worth reporting to the visit.

Why is my glassware cloudy?

The manual says cloudy glassware comes from excess detergent combined with hard water, and recommends less detergent and a rinse aid. If the glasses are cloudy as well as wet, adjust the detergent amount first. A white film on the tub, especially beneath the door, points the same direction, since the manual ties it to hard water minerals.

Care that keeps drying results steady

A packed filter and mineral film both affect how well the spray reaches the dishes. The manual recommends cleaning the filter system regularly and a monthly dishwasher cleaner run as routine maintenance for hard-water residue. Use dishwasher detergent only for tub cleaning, since other cleansers foam.

Hand dishwashing liquid is a particular problem. The manual lists an oversudsing code, BE, and says not to use hand dishwashing liquid in the machine, because excess suds can also leave a wet, filmy load.

Why are my plastics always wet when the dishwasher finishes?

Plastic holds water longer than glass or ceramic, so it often looks wetter even when the cycle worked. Use the top rack only for plastic that is marked dishwasher safe.

Does rinse aid really help dishes dry?

The manual for one Kenmore model says the dishwasher is designed to use rinse aid because it lets water drain off after the final rinse. Check the booklet for your own model.

Should I open the door right after the cycle ends?

Waiting until the cycle completes avoids dumping hot vapor as droplets. If you do open it mid-cycle, close it and press Start within four minutes.

Sort the wet first. Load for drainage, fill rinse aid if the dispenser exists, and only then treat drying as dishwasher repair. Bring the door sticker if the same soak repeats after those habits.
