Error code F9E1 (9-1)
Appliance Dishwasher
Quick answer

F9E1 (9-1) on Kenmore dishwashers: a long drain on 665-prefix models, or an undetected diverter disc position on HE-series units.

Model compatibility

Kenmore reuses codes across series and model years, so F9E1 (9-1) may mean something different on another appliance or generation. Confirm this against your model’s documentation and record your full model number before acting.

Plain language

What this code means

F9E1 means a long drain (665-prefix models) or that the control board cannot detect the diverter disc position.

F9E1 (9-1) is read two ways on Kenmore dishwashers.

Models with a 665 prefix: long drain

The dishwasher takes too long to empty its water. The owner checks are to clean the filter, check the drain hose, the disposer knockout plug and the air gap, and then cycle power for 30 seconds.

HE, Elite HE, Global HE and MicroClean HE: diverter disc

The electronic control board cannot detect the position of the diverter disc. The diverter motor positions that disc so water goes to the lower or upper spray arm, and it reports the disc position back to the board. Unplug the dishwasher and check the wiring going to the diverter motor. Loose wires are reconnected and a damaged harness replaced. If the wiring is intact, the diverter motor is replaced, because it is not sending position signals. Units without a digital display flash the Clean light.
