Error code FE
Appliance Dishwasher
Quick answer

FE on a Kenmore dishwasher whose model number begins 722.146 means water overflow was detected.

Model compatibility

Kenmore reuses codes across series and model years, so FE may mean something different on another appliance or generation. Confirm this against your model’s documentation and record your full model number before acting.

Plain language

What this code means

Water overflow detected.

FE on a Kenmore dishwasher means water overflow was detected. The manual lists it for Kenmore dishwashers with model numbers beginning 722.146.

What happens and what the manual checks

While FE is displayed, the drain pump runs by itself. The manual points to two ways the tub can keep filling: a leaking water inlet valve, or a stuck relay on the electronic control board.

  1. Unplug the dishwasher and watch whether the tub keeps taking on water.
  2. If it does, shut off the water supply. The inlet valve is letting water through nonstop and needs replacing.
  3. If filling stops once the dishwasher is unplugged, the control board is probably at fault, because it keeps sending current to the inlet valve.

Other codes on Kenmore dishwasher lists

  • F9E2: diverter motor is stuck on.
  • F9E4: lower spray arm error.
