Error codeF4
ApplianceRange
Quick answer
F4 on a Kenmore range usually points to an oven temperature sensor, but the series matters. Meanings and checks by range family.
Model compatibility
Kenmore reuses codes across series and model years, so F4 may mean something different on another appliance or generation. Confirm this against your model’s documentation and record your full model number before acting.
Plain language
What thiscode means
F4 points to a defective oven temperature sensor; on Elite 721 ranges it is the lower oven sensor.
Kenmore uses F4 on more than one range family, and the wording differs a little between them. Find your series below.
Kenmore Elite 721-prefix electric ranges
F4 means a defective lower oven temperature sensor. Unplug the range and measure the lower sensor’s resistance. It should read 1,090 ohms at room temperature (77 degrees F). If it is off by more than 100 ohms, the lower oven temperature sensor is replaced.
Kenmore Elite double-oven gas ranges (model numbers starting 721)
The meaning and the check are the same as on the electric 721 range: a defective lower oven temperature sensor, tested by unplugging the range and measuring resistance against 1,090 ohms.
Kenmore 362 freestanding ranges
Here F4 says the oven temperature sensor is defective, electrically shorted. With the range unplugged and the sensor disconnected, a volt/ohm meter should show around 1100 ohms at room temperature. A reading more than 200 ohms away means a new sensor. If the reading is normal, the electronic control board is the next part to replace.
All of these tests use a meter, so they belong to a technician. Owners should unplug the range and note which series they have.
Related Kenmore range codes
F5: also a defective lower oven temperature sensor on the 721 ranges.
F4/E1: a shorted meat probe, easy to mix up with F4.
