Elite 721 electric and double-oven gas ranges: upper oven not heating
On the Kenmore Elite electric range with a 721 prefix, the control shows only F3, F9 and F19 in regular operation. The Elite double-oven gas range with a 721 prefix lists F9 with the same meaning: the upper oven is not heating.
For the electric range, the manual starts with the power supply.
See whether the lower oven elements and the surface burners heat.
If nothing heats, check the house circuit breakers. The range may be getting only 120 volts instead of the 240 volts its heating elements need.
Reset both circuit breakers for the range, because it is often hard to tell whether one tripped.
If it still does not heat, unplug the range and check the power cord wire connections on the terminal block. Reconnect loose wires and replace the power cord if it is damaged.
If the cord and breakers look fine, the manual says a service technician should diagnose the range, because live voltage checks are dangerous when done incorrectly. When only the upper oven fails, unplug the range and check the wire harness between the upper bake element and the relay control board. A technician also measures the resistance of the upper bake element and the upper oven temperature sensor.
362 freestanding and 790 self-cleaning ranges: oven door lock failure
On the Kenmore 362 freestanding range, and on self-cleaning freestanding ranges with a 790 prefix, F9 reports an oven door lock failure. Unplug the range and secure any loose connections in the wire harness between the oven door lock assembly and the electronic control board. Replace the harness if it is damaged, and replace the door lock assembly if it is damaged. On the 790 ranges a technician can also test the door lock switch and the lock motor with a multimeter.
